A Recap of Sorts

Just popping in to say . . .
  • The tulips have bloomed and are falling over.
  • Hot apple fritters have been discovered.
  • Tomato & spinach soup was whipped up with lots of basil accidentally.
  • The Aidez cardigan is super close to completion, and it would have been done much sooner had I not been distracted by this knit which I happened to finish in one week.  Whew!
  • March Break is only a week away.  I'm thinking a day at the sugar bush 'cause we loves our maple-y syrup.  Mmmmm . . .  That's totally worth a vacation day.

If I Baked You a Cake, It Would Look Like This

Just vanilla cake with vanilla icing.  Nothing fancy or crazy like, say, a COUCH or a kitty litter box!  But it would come from my heart.

T.

If you were here, and I gave you this cake, we would eat big squares of it and wash it down with several cups of tea.  We might laugh, and half-chewed up pieces of cake would spray out of our mouths and hit the wall.  After we were done stuffing our faces with cake, we would retire to my couches that are not made of cake, and we would get out our sticks and string and make clickety-clack sorts of sounds for hours.  I would play some croony and swoony songs on my laptop, and eventually the Bumblebee would interrupt us and request some Ke$ha, and we would feel obliged because she has a dimple on her left cheek that is super sweet when she smiles.   We might look down and see our feet tapping to 'tik tok', but we wouldn't make fun of each other, and no one else would ever need to know.  The Bumblebee would also want some balloons blown up, and she would volley one around the room, and eventually it would pop so loud, we'd poop in our pants, and you would get up quickly and insist you leave immediately.   I'd agree because I would also need a change of clothes, and I'd fetch your coat, and the party would be over.

It would have been a blast.  Really.  Happy birthday, my friend!

Be on the lookout for unexpected loud noises all year.

2011

Happy New Year!

I would have to read the archives to remember most of 2011.  If I'm correct, it was a lot of smooth sailing - not much craziness.  If my resolution last New Years was to live more simply, I think I'm getting closer.  I was steered towards soccer by friends, and I am grateful to those peeps.  I made myself a promise that I would knit twelve Elizabeth Zimmerman patterns, and I did cast on twelve; however, three have yet to be finished.  I'd say that wasn't horribly bad.  I didn't add too much yarn to the stash.  I was somewhat controlled.   I learned a lot about photography.   I got more involved with my community at public discussions, and I consider myself a heck of a lot more engaged.  I renegotiated our mortgage.   I connected with friends and family.  I started volunteering again after a bit of a hiatus.  I put my foot down and stood by my opinions.  I picked up my tennis racket again after two decades.   I went to some rockin' concerts.  I did not see any rattlesnakes or bears.  And it was all good.  I'm happy.  My family is healthy.  They have clothes, food and shelter.  They are loved.  I have everything I need and, more importantly, want.

I made my resolution back in November, and it's not really something I can conquer in one year, maybe never.  I'm going to be part of building a caring community.  I think Starship said it best.   They also built this city on rock and roll.  They were so ahead of their time.

And thanks, Kat, for reminding us that we didn't have to take our clothes off to have a good time!  Oh no.

Family Meeting

Inspired by this post, I called a meeting of the minds - big and small.  We compiled a list of all that we want to do and see in December.  Once we got started, there was no stopping us.  Here's our holiday agenda in no particular order although some thing naturally come before others:
  • decorate a gingerbread house
  • get a tree
  • decorate the tree
  • baking extravaganza (the littlest likes these and the eldest likes these)
  • build a snowman
  • wrap gifts
  • go ice skating (LOTS) in the park, at the market, at Storybook, at the arena
  • craft night (I admit that this suggestion got plenty of groaning, but I persisted)
  • listen to lots of holiday music
  • clean and sort and donate
  • two school Christmas concerts
  • tour of lights
  • two family turkey dinners on-site and two family dinner off-site
  • playdates up the wazoo
  • pizza and bowling night
  • wearing our pyjamas and sweats for days on end
Oh yeah, and it's Friday!  I must go make a new banner.

Pebble

This one has been off the needles for over a month now.  I was slow to sew on the buttons and mailing it off to Quebec.  This is the day she opens all of the gifts her blog friends sent, so it should be safe to post today.  I love this pattern.  It really is simple and quick, and I used a smidgeon more than one 50g ball of dk-weight wool.  All the deets are on ravelry here.

As for what's happening on the homefront, I'm sitting on school council, volunteering in a newcomer youth program teaching needlecraft, playing indoor soccer, madly knitting gifts, cooking up applesauce, baking bread, and slow-cooking some spicy tomato soup - not all at the same time.   I've made some big decisions recently - wear more sweatpants and build a caring community.  I'm really into the sweats.  It was I all I could do today to not drive to the store for more sweats.  I wonder if it's a cold weather thing.  I wish I could wear them to the office.  Could you picture me sitting in on Board meetings wearing sweatpants and a hoodie all curled up and cozy recording the minutes?  It would be my luck that it would end badly like the time George got the security guard a rocking chair.

Ooh, I nearly forgot. Mr. J and I went out this week to see a concert at the Aeolian.  This never happens.  We never go out.  We like to be in our jammies by 8 p.m.  We're pretty boring.  However, I was able to pick up some tickets for cheap while also giving to charity, so I youtubed some of the upcoming performers, and I stumbled upon this video.

I fell in love instantaneously.  One of the musicians in the ensemble is the lead singer of The Weakerthans, and I didn't even know this until after I got home.  Apparently I was already in love with this band, and I didn't even know it.  See, I have this friend who makes me mixes - fabulous mixes - without liners.  I have no idea what I'm listening to EVER!  It's weird and brilliant at the same time.   There's a lot of music out there that I absolutely adore, and I haven't a clue what it is.

Speaking of jammies, I think I'll go get mine on, grab a cup of tea, and settle on the sofa with some knitting.

Labour Day at the Lake

She wrote with feathers in the sand.  Mostly her name and initials all over the beach.  Kat and I set up some chairs and knit the best we could with the wind whipping about us.  It was the perfect way to spend the last day of summer.  School starts up again tomorrow.  Have I ever mentioned my dislike for packing lunches?   Oh well, I'll always have Saturdays and Sundays.
It looks like she has feathers up her noodle.  By the way, I was silently screaming inside my head about how dirty those feathers were, but the doodle is still alive and well.

I can not believe how anxious I am about the oldest heading to high school tomorrow.  That's super big.  I have to stop thinking about it.  It's making me old, grey and wrinkled.

Sign Me Up

When I began knitting, I never once thought that one day I would find all things 'sheep' would send me loopy.  Then came the combination of two of my loves, and I had to be picked up off the floor - sheep AND food!  Not just any food - a cherry cake ball coated in white chocolate icing with four black licorice legs, vanilla sprinkles and a black jujube nose on a stick!!  How flippin' cool is this???  Thanks, Rebecca!

Now, T, it's your turn. Copy.

Beautiful Blogger Award

Robyn of the beautiful Knit & Purl Mama blog and owner of Robyn's Nest (go treat yourself to some yarn!)  has given us an award on her blog.  Merci beaucoup!  We are blushing with delight.

To accept this award, here are the rules:
  • Thank the person who gave you the award
  • Paste the award on your blog
  • Link to the person who nominated you
  • Tell 7 interesting things about yourself (see below)
  • Nominate 7 blogs and post links
  • Leave a comment on your nominated blogs to let them know (I'm kind of chicken about doing this. It's kind of like calling someone up and saying your name, and the person asking, "WHO?"  It makes me really self conscious in the worst way.  So I'll just leave this part to the fates.  Seriously.  See interesting fact #6.)
Seven things about us that you might find interesting:

:: We LOVE Hawksley Workman.  He sang to us at the Aeolian Hall late into the night once, and we fell head over heels.
:: We love grammar and language in the most ridiculous way.
:: We used to work at the same organization except I worked upstairs, and T worked downstairs.  We weren't supposed to chat during work hours, so we emailed each other a lot.  To this day, not a working day goes by when we don't email.  So when T moved a million miles away, it's like she's still downstairs, and I'm upstairs.
:: We don't plan our posts at all.  There have been a few times when we literally post within minutes of each other.  It gives me goosebumps 'cause I'm pretty sure she yells out, "TWINS!!!" really loudly at the same time I do.
:: We can eat a lot of meat.  Plates and bowls of meat.  Don't believe me? Please see photographic evidence.
:: We could happily live like hermits and eat hermit cookies.
:: We can both speak, read, and write French.  Alas, I do concur that her French is better than mine.

In no particular order, we would like to declare the following blogs as full of beauty -  tollipop, inspired I amresurrection fern,  kindred crafters, bluebirdbaby, waking up in bavaria, and knitting like it's my job.

Another Year Older

Dear T,

We baked you a cake, iced it and sprinkled it with lots of chocolate chips, but you never came.  So we invited a gaggle of teenagers to watch lame movies in our basement and eat pizza and drink pop.  The cat's got the right idea.  I found her curled up sleeping on top of a mountain of clean clothes in the laundry room.  So smart.

How are you celebrating your birthday several states away from here?   I imagine that Mr. T will take you out for dinner - so that you can eat a lot of meat.   Maybe Ikea for a plate of Swedish meatballs?   I can't even begin to guess because you guys are ten kinds of crazy.   You must tell me all about it next week.   Guaranteed you're in good hands.   Happy birthday, mon ami!  Here's wishing that you get everything you wish for and more.

Cheers!

Swings

The Bee and I went on a photowalk on the weekend, and a good time was had.   Somehow we ended up at the playground.  Surprisingly, playgrounds are as fun if not 'funner' in the winter.   And although I have no pictures to prove it, I am slowly learning how to crochet, so that my dear friend is not alone on the dark side.  I really just want to make a ziggity-zaggity throw blanket in crazy stripes.  I believe that once I accomplish this, I shall have 'it' out of my system.   Any bets?

Baby Shower

I managed to get the February Baby Sweater finished in plenty of time. I even found a simple white onesie for under the sweater. Rather than knitting buttonholes and sewing on buttons or even knitting i-cords for closing the sweater, I found a very thin lilac satin ribbon in my craft stash, and I threaded it on a seaming needle and simply wove the ribbon through the stitches in the first increase row in the garter-stitch yoke. I really like how it turned out.
And those cupcakes were yummy.

Retreat

Back from a relaxing one-night retreat by the beach with friends. That was very nice.

Falling Slowly

Look at that! I'm ready to pick up stitches for the neck!!! And I read up on finishing techniques using my Debbie Bliss How To Knit book. Excellent diagrams and text if I do say so myself. I can't even see the side seams on the body of the sweater. Those seams up there are shoulder seams - they're even and consistent, but not invisible, which is typical of shoulder seams. I'm still a bit nervous about knitting the sleeves in to the body since I decided to knit them in the round which was not per the pattern instructions. Oh well.

This little pretty pink skein of 100% cashmere made my entire week! Thank you again, Lauren! I've been hunting for the perfect cowl pattern for finger-weight. Any suggestions would be welcome. I'm thinking a lace pattern would be ideal.

And we've been picking up signs of fall during our sporadic walks in the neighbourhood. Must. Get. Out. More. The sun is shining today against the weather channel's predictions, and it's begging for us to go out and play! Can do.
Happy Sunday!

30 Days of Happiness :: Tangrams

A couple weeks back, the girls were gifted a tangram set from Laurie. I said, "Thanks." and I smiled. I kept my excitement subdued until after she left.
TANGRAM!!! Woot! Woot! Holy moley mole!!! a FLIPPIN' TANGRAM set!!!!! For FREE!! For US!! To KEEP!!!! FOREVER!!!!
I know. It's kind of sad how happy I am. But it's big-sized and made out of sturdy smooth wood and comes with a whole book on shapes we HAVE to make using all the pieces. It's a super math challenge for the brains. Think of all the spatial geometry skillz we're going to have after hours of enjoyment with this thing. It's making me happy that we're probably going to be mathematical geniuses. Be afraid. Be very afraid.

30 Days of Happiness :: Weddings

The bride knit the white silk shrug which she wore over her bright raspberry pink satin gown! It was a masterpiece!! The light was horrible in the reception room, so although I had hoped for some beautifully artistic shots of the bride and groom, I gave up and sat down to enjoy my time with friends instead. It makes me happy to see my dear friend marry her true love. It has taken many years to come to fruition, but we knew it was inevitable when we met her. She was secretly knitting a big green sweater for her man, and right then and there, we decided that this was real love. And another time, she left a knitters fair ridiculously early because she missed him. We thought she was crazy, but she explained it this way, "You know how much you gals love to knit? Well that's how how I feel about this man." Enough said! I couldn't be happier for my friend. Happy Wedding Day, Maria!

30 Days of Happiness :: This Blog

Holy shizzle! Yesterday marked our 500th post! That's making me happy! How come I didn't see that until today?? Remember 3 years ago when you were leaving me forever and you said that you were horrible at keeping in touch? I figured that would be just my flippin' luck 'cause I sucked too at long-distance communication. I think I might have cried while driving away from you on my way to the gym. Well, looky here. We have proven that to be just the opposite. We are very good at keeping in touch thanks to this little ol' blog here and the internets. 500 posts!! Crazy. HAPPY 500 posts to us, mon ami.

Inkberry Blue

Thanks to the world of blogs, I have met some of the most wonderful peeps from all over. Fiona of Inkberry Blue is seriously halfway around the globe, but I happened upon her blog ages ago, and I was mesmerized by one of her watercolour paintings. Today I got three of her prints in the mail along with a crocheted washcloth, homemade soap, and a 'bless' stone! Anyone who knows me and has been to my house knows that these prints scream ME. Really. They couldn't be more perfect. I have to whip down to IKEA and pick up three frames (and a 2009 catalogue), and hang them up prominently in my living room for all to see as soon as they walk in the door. And if they miss them, people will be stopped and lectured. Just saying.
Thank you, Fiona, for the lovely package. I feel as if I need to send you my first-born in return. :) Just say the word!

Holy Toledo Civic Weekend

We've been blessed with a 3-day weekend in which relaxing is definitely on the agenda! We're kicking back between toasted tomato sandwiches with cream cheese and garden salads AND sponge cake with real whip cream and berries. There will be lots of basking on the couch with my knitting (the 3rd clapotis is DONE - pictures to come) and a pile of Sue Townsend novels. I expect there will be drowsing off to sleep when my eyelids get to heavy to read another word and staying up too late on ravelry inputting all the gold I whisked away from yesterday's yard sale (that's the top photo minus another 30 skeins of wool that didn't fit in the picture). Each skein was a dollar, and I now have 100 more to add to the stash - do the math. There's Noro, Debbie Bliss, Koigu, Jo Sharp, Rowan and Manos del Uruguay. Am I dreaming???? Somebody pinch me. Today there was a girls trip to IKEA for Swedish meatballs, slipcovers, storage bins and fabric, and I laughed so hard that I had to wipe the tears from my eyes.
A weekend like this comes once a lifetime! I wish it didn't have to end.

Mommy Dearest

I was at a small gathering of ladies the other night, and we had this most intriguing conversation about 13-year olds. One of them was having a birthday this weekend, and her mum was anxious to get home and start baking the cake for the 3-tiered birthday cake requested by the birthday girl. The room was still with awe for this truly great act of love. I was even more shocked and blurted out, "Didn't she throw a shoe to your head recently?" She corrected me, and said it was a soccer cleat. I suggested she save herself a tier, but she just chuckled and asked me if she should hold that over her daughter's head forever, and I remembered how lucky I am to have friends who are fabulous mothers and who are able to role model better behaviour and attitudes than my own. In order to survive the teenage years, I think I will have to remember this well. And the youngest has been watching Annie again and singing "The sun'll come up tomorrow. Bet your bottom dollar that tomorrow, there'll be sun.", and they're all right. Tomorrow is a new day, and the soccer cleat was SO yesterday! Therefore, bake your cakes today, and smile. I think. : )

My first Geek Dinner London Meetup:

"Crap. I forgot my internet card."
"Hey, check it out! This chick's laptop is SO old that she's got an internet card!!"
"Just unplug the lights."
"Great. You just pissed off all the geeks."
"Do we have to pay extra for lights?"
"I love balkan-style yogurt!"
"Just unplug the laptop."
"Crap. Those were the lights for the whole bar."
"Just wait for your eyes to adjust."
"You should twitter that."
"I could take a better picture if there was more light."
"Give me your camera. I want to take a picture of the outlet."
"How do you adjust the aperture on this thing?"
"Sorry I cut off your head."
"Watch out. I have teeth."
"No one is talking to us."
"We're not talking to anyone either."
"I know that guy over there."
"Go say hi. I dare you."
"No."
"He looked at me."
"That's it. Go say hi."
"It wasn't a look of recognition."
"What time is it?"
"9 o'clock"
"Do you want us to escort you out?"
"Let me unplug your power cord and plug the lights back in."
"Last call! Do it again and yell out 'last call'"
"Let's beat this joint."
"We did good. We made a friend."
"Pull the car around."
"I'm nervous about exiting the parking lot."
"Next time, I'll drive."
"You'd think she'd have a harder time turning left."
"That was a raccoon."
"Send me that picture of the outlet asap."

I did end up downloading Picasa when I got home, and I finished our new banner. Let me know if you'd rather have the magnolia picture, T. I don't know how long I can keep a picture of El's butt up there before she gets hostile. Not sure why she would be upset to be honest. It's a cute rear end.
